Precast U-Drains

U-Drains & Cover Slabs

At Regimanuel Concrete Products Limited (RCP), our precast U‑Drains deliver robust, precision‑engineered channel drainage solutions for Ghana’s toughest environments.

Manufactured from high‑strength C30/37 concrete, with optional reinforcement enhancements on demand, these U‑Drains reliably manage stormwater runoff, surface drainage, and industrial effluent across roadways, car parks, airport aprons, and port facilities.

Our U‑Drains are available in eleven standard profiles (from U 350 – 310 up to U 1200 – 1200), ensuring the right fit for light‑traffic pedestrian areas through to heavy‑load haulage zones. Each profile’s clear opening width and depth are optimized for specific flow rates and sediment loads.

Match any U‑Drain with a complementary U‑Drain Cover Slab (580 × 500 × 150 mm up to 1330 × 500 × 150 mm) for added safety and load rating. All slabs meet a minimum 175 kN bearing capacity and can be further reinforced for heavy‑duty applications.

Pre‑fabricated units ensure consistent quality control and speedy on‑site assembly, minimizing excavation time and labour costs. The smooth internal finish resists debris buildup, while optional anti‑skid covers enhance pedestrian and vehicular safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Precast U‑drains are factory-made, U‑shaped concrete channels used to carry stormwater and surface runoff. They are often reinforced and factory-cast for high quality and consistency. In practice, U‑drains serve as stormwater drains, cable trenches or irrigation channels. For example, they are used along roadways, in industrial sites and even in farmland irrigation or river embankment drainage. Compared to cast‑in‑place concrete, precast U‑drains install much faster and with better quality control, reducing onsite labor and delays.

Precast U-drains are made in a range of standard widths and depths. Common channel sizes range from about 300×300 mm up to 1200×1200 mm (width×height), typically in 1–2 m lengths. Larger or custom dimensions are available for big projects. Channels are engineered for different load classes: lighter-duty channels (pedestrian or light traffic) and heavy-duty channels (for highways or industrial vehicles). For instance, industry designs often use “T‑6” (moderate traffic) and “T‑25” (heavy traffic) categories. Heavy-duty U-drains can carry HS20/F900 class loads (like large trucks and container cranes) when fitted with appropriate covers. In Ghana, typical projects in Accra, Tema or Takoradi often require robust (Class C or higher) drains to withstand local loads. Always specify the load class needed so the drain section and cover are suitably rated.

Precast U-drains are made of high-strength, reinforced concrete. Engineering practice (e.g. Singapore standards) calls for at least C28/35 concrete (≈28–35 MPa compressive strength) and 40 mm cover to reinforcement. Local Ghanaian producers use similar grades (often 25–30 MPa) with steel rebar reinforcement. Research in Ghana has shown a properly batched 1:1.5:3 mix yielding 8–20 MPa (N/mm²) in 3–28 days, indicating drains easily meet design strength. Channels often include integrated weep holes or anchoring points. Covers may be solid slabs or grated – heavy-duty covers are typically made of galvanized or stainless steel or ductile iron for durability. Fiber‐reinforced plastic (FRP) grates and polymer concrete covers are also used for corrosion resistance. Design drawings ensure proper slope, joints and surcharge loads (for example, a 12 kN/m² live load for roadside drains).

Precast U-drains are widely used wherever reliable drainage is needed. They are ideal for industrial stormwater drainage (factories, warehouses), roadside and highway drains, airport and port terminals, and even agricultural irrigation channels. For example, the Tema Port expansion used high-capacity precast channels to handle Ghana’s heavy rains. Contractors in the Tema Free Zone and other industrial parks routinely install U-drains for factory yards. In Accra and Kumasi, U-drains protect roads, parking lots and residential developments from flooding. Because Ghana’s rainy seasons can be intense, engineers often prefer precast channels with large flows and smooth self-cleaning profiles. In summary, U-drains are used across Ghana – in Accra/Tema commercial projects, Takoradi/Kumasi highways and ports, and even on farms for irrigation runoff.

Installation is straightforward and faster than casting in place. Typical steps include:

  • Excavate trench to the correct depth, allowing for a compacted base layer (often lean concrete or well-graded gravel).

  • Level and align the base so channels sit straight; channels should slope slightly for flow. A level base prevents settling or misalignment.

  • Place U-drain units end to end. Most precast U-drains have tongue-and-groove or keyed joints for easy alignment. Use rubber joint seals or grout to prevent leakage at connections.

  • Connect reinforcement if needed (some systems allow tying rebar across joints). For slabbed covers, additional top reinforcement may be laid.

  • Backfill and compact around the sides of the drain: use granular soil, compacting in layers from the sides up to the top of the channels. Ensure the drain remains level.

  • Install covers or gratings: Place the precast slab covers or set the metal grates onto the channel. Adjust for final grade with the surrounding pavement.

Because precast drains arrive ready-cured, on-site curing time is eliminated, and a trained crew can set and backfill many meters of drain per day. For complex paths, bends can be pre-fabricated. Always follow manufacturer instructions and local engineering standards during installation.

U-drains can be supplied with or without covers/grates depending on the project. Covers protect the channel, support loads, and can be solid or grated. Common options include:

  • Precast concrete slab covers (bonded slabs or panels) for heavy loads (e.g. roadways). These provide a smooth pedestrian/vehicle surface.
  • Metal grates or slot covers (steel, ductile iron, stainless) that allow runoff entry while blocking debris. Heavy-duty traffic uses B125, C250 or higher-class ductile iron grates. Polymeric or composite grates are used for lighter loads. Well-made metal covers (galvanized or stainless) are “far greater durability than plastic drains”, especially under Ghana’s climate.
  • Cable/channel covers (for cable trenches) that lock or screw on for safety.

When selecting covers, consider the load class (pedestrian vs vehicle), safety (anti-slip slots or patterns), and maintenance (removable vs fixed). Many Ghana engineers use bolted slot gratings for factory floors and cast-in covers for roads. Our team can advise on the right cover design (solid slab vs grated) and material for your site conditions.

Precast U-drain costs depend on size, quantity, and specification (reinforcement, covers, etc.). Pricing is typically quoted per meter of channel plus any covers or accessories. Selecting the correct U-drain involves a few key factors:

  • Flow & size: Estimate the peak stormwater flow (e.g. per Ghana Building Code or local guidelines). This dictates channel cross-section (width & depth). Larger watersheds or heavy rainfall areas need wider U‑drains.

  • Traffic load: Choose a load class based on the area’s use. Heavy vehicles (trucks, forklifts) require a heavy-duty design and grating (HS20, Class D, etc.), while pedestrian or light-vehicle areas can use lighter channels. Consult standards (EN 1433, AASHTO, or local codes) if needed.

  • Soil and environment: In clay or weak soils, plan a strong base (concrete or compacted gravel) to prevent settling. In corrosive or exposed areas, consider polymer-modified concrete or FRP covers.

  • Accessories: Factor in extra features like manholes, bends, outlet connections, or catch basins. Precast U-drains can integrate with standard manholes and junctions.

  • Standards & quality: Always use U‑drains that meet recognized standards (Ghana Standards Authority or international norms). Look for proper reinforcement, strength testing, and supplier track record.

Our engineers can guide you through these choices. We also offer on-site consultation to match a U-drain system to your specific project needs. Detailed technical support ensures your U-drain installation (e.g. slope, bedding, joints) follows best practices for years of reliable performance.
